Golden Tigers conduct first of three day trips

Members of Cowley College’s Golden Tigers recently had an opportunity to take a day trip to Tanganyika Wildlife Park and Botanica Gardens in Wichita. The “Wildlife and Nature” day trip was one of three trips planned this fall.

According to Golden Tigers coordinator Micah Fry, the group started the day at Tanganyika where they were given a small tour and then individuals on the trip were able to select animal encounters to take part in while they explored the park.

“We fed lemurs, lorikeets, tortoises, and giraffes; petted kangaroos; and were able to explore the children’s area where we interacted with smaller domestic animals like guinea pigs and rabbits,” Fry said.

McAlister’s Deli then hosted the group for lunch.

“McAlister’s definitely won some new fans,” Fry said.

In the afternoon, the Golden Tigers were given a tour of Botanica Gardens and were able to sample treats made using ingredients from the gardens. One of Botanica’s newest gardens, the Koch Carousel Gardens, includes the recently restored Joyland Amusement Park wooden Carousel. Those who wanted to were able to take a ride on the carousel.

“This was such a fun trip,” Fry said. “We had a great time. I think it was a perfect balance of adventure and education. We were able to learn new things and have some memorable experiences. I am already looking forward to our next adventure.”

The Golden Tigers’ October trip is waitlisted, but there are still spots open for their November trip to Topeka where the group will tour the Kansas State Capitol and visit the Kansas Museum of History.
