Top spellers awarded

The annual Winfield City Spelling Bee was held Thursday in WHS Auditorium and featured spellers from around district. Third- through eighth-grade students from Trinity Lutheran, Holy Name, Lowell, Irving, Whittier, Country View and Winfield Middle School battled through a list of words that would stump many an adult. Guava, tendrils and medicinal moved to cooperage, hibiscus, calculus and finally, after a three-round battle, the winning word was rivulets (small streams). The top four spellers will represent Winfield at the County Spelling Bee on Jan. 13 in Burden.

From left: first place, Copeland Quiett, seventh grade, WMS; second place, David Partin, fourth grade, Irving; third place, Rawson Ray, eighth grade, WMS; fourth place, Noel Sanborn, sixth grade, WMS; first runner-up, Paul Do, seventh grade, WMS; and second runner-up, Brooklyn Cummings, fourth grade, Trinity Lutheran.
