In lieu of flowers, memorials haven been established with Winfield Area Habitat for Humanity and First Baptist Church in Winfield.

Derrel was born Dec. 18, 1925, on a farm south of Argonia, to E.G. and Madge (Conn) Pearce. He was educated in a rural elementary school and attended Argonia High School. He farmed with his father, E.G. Pearce, for 10 years.

Derrel married Vivian Funk, his high school sweetheart, on Aug. 4, 1946 at the First Baptist Church in Argonia. To this loving union were born two sons and four daughters.

Derrel and Vivian moved to Winfield in 1953. He began working for Snodgrass and Funk Construction. He became a partner with Erwin Funk in the construction company upon the retirement of Verne Snodgrass in 1966. After Erwin's retirement, Derrel carried on the fine reputation of Snodgrass and Funk Construction until his retirement in 2000. It is impossible to calculate the number of homes and businesses with his brand of quality workmanship. He has left his mark on Winfield and the surrounding area by his building skills and his love of people.

At the establishment of Winfield Area Habitat for Humanity, Derrel was a vital part of constructing 25 houses. He worked on every house from 1992 to 2018.

Derrel was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers; older brother, Merle; younger brother, David; and three sisters, Alice Phillippi, Doris Kuykendall, and Joy Kosydar.

He will be greatly missed by Vivian, his wife of 72 years; sons, John and wife, Aletha Pearce, of Mesa, Ariz., and Mark and Cindy Pearce, of Austin, Texas; daughters, Teresa and Gary Moore, of Arkansas City, Carol and Max Cummings, of Cedar Vale, Kathy and Roger Fox, of Winfield, and Marsha and Arlon Wesseler, of Winfield; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He is also survived by brothers, Denzel and Barbara Pearce, of Wichita, and Dean and Kathy Pearce, of Centralia, Ill., and numerous nieces and nephews.
