Don Rakestraw, 73, of Gainesville, Texas, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2021 in Dallas, Texas.
Graveside services with military honors are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13 at Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.

Don was born Aug. 2, 1947, in Superior, Neb. He graduated from high school in Republic. Shortly after graduation, Don enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in Vietnam. He married Linda Wright on Dec. 8, 1975 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Mr. Rakestraw was discharged from the Air Force following 15 years of service. The family remained in Wichita Falls, where Don was a civil service instructor at Shepherd Air Force Base. He was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and always had a building or remodeling project going. Mr. Rakestraw was a passionate member of VFW Post 1922. He enjoyed golfing, but especially enjoyed spoiling his beloved grandchildren.
Mr. Rakestraw was preceded in death by his parents, Myrl and Irene Rakestraw; grandson, Zachary Rakestraw; and brothers, George Rakestraw and Myrl Rakestraw Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Linda Rakestraw, of Gainesville, Texas; son, Russell Schmid and wife, Brenda, of Gainesville, Texas; daughter, Lisa Bowles and husband, Fred, of Valley View, Texas; daughter, Chantelle Redman and husband, Tim, of Benedict, Neb.; son, Devin Rakestraw and wife, Nancy, of Lewisville, Texas; son, Jay Bowen and wife, April, of Lewisville, Texas; daughter, Stacy Childress, of Gainesville, Texas; grandchildren, Jason, Trevor, Travis, Ryan, Josh, Courtney, Brianna, Logan and Cody; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, LeRoy Rakestraw and wife, Judy, of Winfield; and sister, Carolyn Meints and husband, Gayle, of Columbus, Neb.
