With the passing of our admired former police chief, Ed Winebrenner, at a time when there have been some police killings, I remember his concern that new police officers be carefully chosen. He knew that some applicants saw being a police office as a way to meet some of their personal needs rather than the needs of the public.

To help him make the best possible decision he had each candidate professionally screened. I was happy to complete that process for him.

As he was leaving for Washington state, noted for summer rain, his friends suggested that he take a good look at that Kansas sun because during a summer in Washington state people don’t tan they rust.
