Stingy defense propels Ark City to 42-34 victory

Shutdown defense is a term usually reserved for football.

The Arkansas City High School boys basketball team held visiting Goddard-Eisenhower to just five points between the second and third quarters Friday night, spelling the difference in a 42-34 ACHS victory in the Dawg Pound.

The Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1 AV-CTL D-II) held Eisenhower to just 23.4-percent (11 of 47) shooting in the game.

Eisenhower used a 9-1 run to lead 12-9 after the first quarter, but Ark City held the Tigers (2-4, 2-1) to just two points in the second quarter to pull even 14-14 at the break.

An 18-2 second-half run allowed the Bulldogs to pull away.

Brock Merz had a solid all-around game with a game-high 15 points to go with seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

Cadon Clark added seven points on 5-of-6 shooting from the foul line, while Doug Stewart had six points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs, who were 10 of 14 from the line overall. Isaiah Oliver also grabbed seven boards.

Nick Hogan’s 12-point, 13-rebound double-double led the Tigers, who were 10 of 18 from the line.

Class 5A No. 5-ranked Goddard-Eisenhower was not a fair opponent for the Arkansas City Lady Bulldogs coming out of the Christmas break.

The Lady Tigers rolled to a 69-8 victory in AV-CTL D-II play Friday.

It was the third time in five games this season that the Lady Bulldogs (0-5, 0-3 AV-CTL D-II) were shut out in the first quarter.

Ark City has been outscored 101-3 in the first quarter and 184-21 in the first half this season. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 43-3 at the break on Friday.

Emma Badley scored four points to lead the Lady Bulldogs, who shot 14.3 percent (3 of 21) in the game, just 1 of 11 in the first half. Ark City committed 35 turnovers and was outrebounded 30-20. Those led to a 50-2 advantage in points off turnovers for the Lady Tigers (3-2, 2-1) and a 19-4 edge in second-chance points.

Taylor Burkholder finished with 16 points, while Payton Ryan and Kennedy Nicholson added 14 points apiece for the Lady Tigers, who shot 51 percent (29 of 57) from the floor and 6 of 10 from the line.
