One day after sweeping a doubleheader for the first time in two years, the Southwestern College softball team was swept in a KCAC doubleheader Saturday against McPherson on Senior Day in the final home games of the season.
Southwestern lost Saturday’s opener 7-3 and the nightcap 5-1, both in eight innings.
The Lady Builders took the opener of Thursday’s storm-delayed twinbill at Bethel before Game 2 was postponed until Friday.
When the two teams took the field again, Southwestern scored three runs in the top of the seventh for an 8-7 come-from-behind victory.
It was the first doubleheader sweep for the Lady Builders (5-34, 3-19) since April 18, 2021 at home against York.
Natalie Davis ripped a two-run, game-tying double to right-center and Taylor Mensa put Southwestern ahead with an RBI single.
Jordan Gates earned the victory in the circle in relief of starter Alexus Johnson, who went the distance to win Game 1 on Thursday.
Zoe Berger stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two out in the top of the first inning and unloaded them with a three-run triple. Berger and Loren Wright had two hits apiece for Southwestern.
Saturday’s twinbill was a dual heartbreaker for the Lady Builders, who lost both games in extra innings.
The Lady Bulldogs (18-18, 11-11) used a five-run eighth inning to win the opener.
McPherson scored four runs in the top of the eighth in the nightcap. Amanda Ambrosy drove in three of them with a bases-loaded triple.
Johnson had two hits in the opener. Berger and Isabel Lytle had two hits apiece in Game 2.
