The Arkansas City boys cross country team achieved its major goal this season by qualifying for the State meet when it finished third in Regional competition Saturday hosted by Bishop Carroll at Lake Afton.

The girls’ 5th-place finish fell short of making state as a team, but they qualified two individual runners into the Class 5A State competition, which will take place Saturday at 4 Mile Creek Resort in August. The girls race at 10 a.m. the boys start at 11:20 a.m.

The boys team score of 87 was enough to beat out five other squads and was 41 points behind Regional champion Bishop Carroll.

The Bulldogs also won their league meet this season, the first league title since 1999. They hadn’t qualified for State since 2001, when they finished eighth.

Coach Andrae Harper said the boys worked hard all summer with the State meet in mind.

“Having two of our boys in the top 10 helped us to accomplish this goal,” Harper said. “Owen Seaton an Manuel Leos ran great races to finish 6th and 10th respectively. I thought all of our boys competed well.

“We are also thrilled that we got two girls into the state meet. Jasmine Calvo and Natalia Onelio competed well and gave it their all.”

Sophomore Owen Seaton led the way for the Bulldogs with a 6th place overall finish out of 58 runners. He navigated the 5K course in 17 minutes and 14.79 seconds. Junior Manuel Leos also took the medal stand by coming in 10th place in 17.20.29.

Senior Chase Mathews finished 19th with a time of 17.48.04. Sophomore Brandon Klotz clocked in at 18.08.36 for 25th place, followed by fellow sophomore Gabe Onelio at 18.19.05 in 27th.

The top five runners for each team count toward the overall team scores that determine who moved on to State.

On the girls side, a pair of freshmen punched their tickets to State on the strength of their individual performances. Jasmine Calvo placed 14th overall out of 55 runners with a time of 21.34.25; teammate Natalie Onelio was right behind Calvo in 15th place in 21.47.74.

“We hope to have our boys finish in the top 10 of the state meet,” Harper said, “and hopefully we get to bring home some medals, and have all of our runners improve and run a PR.”
