The No. 6-ranked Johnson County baseball team emphatically capped a four-game series sweep against Cowley by shutting out the Tigers 9-0 in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader at City Ball Park.
The Cavaliers (41-7, 25-3 Jayhawk East) outscored Cowley 38-14 in the four-game series and clinched at least a share of the East title. The Tigers (27-17, 17-7) have dropped five straight.
The Tigers managed just five hits in the two games while being shut out for the first time since March 5.
Cowley starters Brigden Parker (3-1) and Danny Satterlee (3-3) combined to surrender 12 runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Ty Blecha tossed a four-hit shutout in Game 1, and Gabe Nutter and Michael Infranca combined on a one-hit shutout in the nightcap.
The Tigers were swept in Thursday’s twinbill 9-4 and 11-10.
Sophomore Ty Hammack led off the opener with his 11th home run of the season. However, the Cavaliers answered with a two-run homer by Cooper Combs in the bottom of the first and a solo shot by Rhett Hendricks in the second.
Freshman designated hitter Cole Martin had two of Cowley’s seven hits.
Chance Cox (3-1) allowed seven hits and six earned runs.
Johnson County starter Luc Fladda went the distance, striking out five and scattering seven hits.
The Cavs scored three runs off Cowley starter Cade Perkins in the bottom of the second inning of Game 2.
