LINDSBORG — The No. 25-ranked Southwestern College football team was firing on all cylinders Saturday, rolling to a 35-9 victory at Bethany in KCAC action.

The Builders (2-0) piled up 341 yards of total offense and scored in every quarter, pulling away from a 14-3 halftime lead.

Southwestern’s defense held the Swedes to a lone touchdown, and 3 of 15 on third-down conversions and 2 of 6 on fourth down.

Place kicker Gabriel Medrano did his part for special teams, successfully booting 5 of 5 on extra-point tries.

The Bethany defense focused on Southwestern’s ground game and held the Builders to 61 ground yards on 33 attempts. But SC quarterback Luke Barnes racked up 280 yards on 21-of-38 passing.  Keyshawn Jones was the biggest benefactor, reeling in eight catches for 130 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown reception with 10 seconds left in the first half. Ziyon Kenner caught six passes for 71 yards.

After the Builders held Bethany to four-and-out on the first drive of the game, Barnes completed a 7-yard TD pass to Andre Jones to cap an 11-play, 61-yard drive.

Southwestern held the Swedes (0-1) on their next possession when Clayton Downum and Denzel Harris drove Bethany tailback Akeer Franklin back for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and 1 near midfield.

The Builders used a goal-line stand when the Swedes had first-and-goal at the 2, forcing Collin Hayes to kick a 26-yard field goal to cut their deficit to 7-3.

Southwestern responded with another 11-play drive capped the hookup to Keyshawn Jones just before the half.

The defense set up Southwestern’s first score of the second half when Seth McManus intercepted a pass by Bethany quarterback Kobe Marton, setting up the Builders at the Bethany 35. Barnes immediately hit Ziyon Kenner on a 34-yard pass to the 1-yard line and Jaquils Coleman scored the first of his two 1-yard touchdown runs.

The Swedes finally found the end zone with 6:31 left in the third quarter when Martin led them on a five-play drive capped by a 9-yard TD run by Franklin, but they failed on a 2-point conversion.

David Roper II punctuated the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown run with 4:06 left in the game.

Franklin led the Swedes with 66 yards on 10 carries. Martin was 11-of-19 passing for 119 yards.

The Builders return home next weekend for a 6 p.m. Kickoff Saturday against Saint Mary.

The Spires (0-1) were idle last weekend after opening the season two weeks ago with a 49-10 loss at Sterling.
