AFTON — The Arkansas City High School boys cross country team captured the team title Thursday afternoon at the Goddard Invitational at Lake Afton Park.

The Bulldogs girls placed three in the top 11, including first place.

“It was really exciting watching our kids compete today,” ACHS coach Andrae Harper said. “We had seven kids run PRs and several that were close to theirs.”

ACHS sophomore Owen Seaton took home the individual medal in the boys race and freshman Jasmine Calvo won the girls title.

Seaton finished the 5K in a personal-best 17 minutes, 38.1 seconds, more than four seconds ahead of runner-up Zach Winter of Andale (17:42.9).

“Owen Seaton has ran a PR every race so far this year and stepped up big this week to finish as our No. 1 runner and also win the race,” Harper said.

Calvo completed the 5K course in 22:25.5, nearly 25 seconds ahead of the pack and 21 seconds better than her previous best. Kyrsten Lucent of team champion Rose Hill was runner-up (22:50.1).

“It was great seeing our boys win the overall meet and also take home the individual title in both the boys and girls varsity races,” Harper added. “I can’t remember the last time that happened. I’m very proud of our runners and their dedication to improving and getting better each week, and it is rewarding to see their hard work pay off. We know that we have more work to do if we want to accomplish our goals.”

Five of the top eight runners in the race were Bulldogs. The lowest possible score for a five-man team score is 15 points and Ark City tallied 20 points.

Senior Chase Mathews finished third in 18:12.9, one spot ahead of junior Manuel Leos (18:18.3), who was one spot ahead of sophomore Gabriel Onelio (18:31.3). Sophomore Brandon Klotz placed eighth in 18:57.9 to round out the team scoring for Ark City.

The Lady Bulldogs didn’t field a complete team, but took three top-11 spots.

Senior Amelia Onelio finished fifth in 23:31.5 and freshman Natalia Onelio just missed the top 10, placing 11th in 24:01.6.

Winfield didn’t take any runners to the varsity race, but WHS freshman Heath Reed won the junior varsity boys race in 19:31.6.

Sophomore Jaden BrownGa wasn’t far behind in third (20:04.2).
