WICHITA — The Winfield High School girls golf team began a rigorous week Monday with the first of three meets, this one the Andover Invitational at Crestview Country Club.

The Lady Vikings didn’t take a full squad because of meets scheduled that include the Winfield Invitational on Thursday at Winfield Country Club and the Hesston Invitational on Friday at Hesston Golf Park.

“We have three tournaments this week, so we didn’t have a full team (Monday),” WHS coach Dave Bertholf said. “I hate for kids to miss that much school.”

Junior Savanna Nickum and senior Chaney Littell finished in a three-way tie for sixth place with Jaden Kordonowy of Maize South, each carding a 92. Nickum won a scorecard playoff.

Nickum shaved five strokes off of her career best for an 18-hole meet. She fired a 97 on Sept. 9 at the Winfield Invitational.

“Savanna has really been making improvement and it was good to see her have a good day,” Bertholf said. “She has been putting in extra hours and has been playing with a good attitude.”

Littell’s career low is a 95 she shot at this meet a year ago.

“Crestview is a good course and was a good test for our girls,” Bertholf said. “Chaney would have liked to play better, but she grinded out a top 10 finish on a day she wasn’t hitting it as well as she would have liked.”

Meg Tilma of team champion Kapaun Mt. Carmel fired a 1-under 71, two strokes ahead of her sister, Kate. The Lady Crusaders took the top four spots atop the leaderboard.

Carley Littell just missed a medal, finishing 12th with a 95. Her career low for an 18-hole meet is a 92 set on Aug. 31 at the Emporia Invitational.

The Arkansas City Lady Bulldogs fielded a full squad and placed sixth among eight teams.

Junior Breanna Ruyle carded a career-low 97 to place 13th, just out of medal contention. Ruyle fired a 96 at Winfield.

Teammate Tayeah Rich shot a career low for an 18-hole meet with a 115, tying for 34rd. Rich’s previous low was a 120 at Winfield.

Kamryn Mendoza (128) and Aidyn Holman (129) placed 44th and 45th, respectively for the Lady Bulldogs.
