Vikings so close to stunning Mac

Winfield High School junior Ar’mon Acosta moves the ball up the court as sophomore Trey Thiel trails the play Friday at McPherson. Acosta is pressured by McPherson guard Jayden Dukes.

McPHERSON — The Winfield High School boys basketball team had upset on its minds Friday night at Class 4A No. 4 McPherson.

The Vikings took McPherson to overtime before the Bullpups escaped with a 50-46 victory in AV-CTL D-III action at the Roundhouse.

Winfield (1-5, 1-2 AV-CTL D-III) led 37-33 when Seth Madron drained a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining in regulation.

The Bullpups (5-2, 3-0) fouled Aidan Harper with 2.7 seconds left. Harper coolly sank both free throws to make it a 39-36 Vikings lead. However, Jayton Alexander’s 3-pointer tied the game and sent it into overtime.

Pyle, who was 0 of 6 from beyond the arc in regulation, buried a trey in the extra session and the Bullpups staged off the upset.

The Vikings stunned the home crowd with a 16-8 first-quarter lead and led by as many as 10 — holding the advantage for all but the final minutes. McPherson never led by more than two points and never in the first half.

Winfield shot 52 percent (10 of 19) from the floor in the first half, but the Bullpups cut their deficit to 22-19 by halftime. The Vikings finished 42.5 percent (17 of 40) shooting.

Turnovers and free throws were costly in helping to put away the Bullpups. Winfield coughed up 21 turnovers to just 14 for the Bullpups, and the Vikes were just 9 of 22 from the line.

Harper toyed with a double-double, finishing with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go with nine rebounds.

Kyan Towles led the Vikings with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Trent Beckwith gave the Vikings three players in double figures with 11 points.

The Bullpups were held to 29-percent (7 of 24) shooting in the first half before improving to 33 percent (19 of 57) from the floor. McPherson was 7 of 14 from the line.

Madron and Seth Madron finished with 17 points apiece, and Alexander added 11 for McPherson.
