The Winfield High School girls golf team placed second in the Class 4A state tournament in Salina. From left are Coach Dave Bertholf, Savanna Nickum, Chaney Littell, Celine Mendoza, Carley Littell, Clover Maples and Coach Hottinger.

After two days of golf, it came down to one stroke for first place between Winfield and Wamego at the Class 4A high school girls state golf tournament at Salina Municipal Golf Course. In the end, it was Wamego who took home the crown, with the Winfield Vikings bringing home second place.

The team ground through some early struggles before putting on a late charge, but ultimately came up short.

“We dug ourselves a pretty deep hole after day one. I didn't think we handled adversity as well as we could on day one, but came back on day two and played like champions,” said Winfield head coach Dave Bertholf.

Although disappointed by the final score, Bertholf said he was not disappointed by the Winfield golfers.

“We fought to the finish. They have been a great team all year, winning league and regionals. We will lose two very important seniors. Celine (Mendoza) and Chaney (Littell) will be missed,” said Bertholf.

The leadership displayed by Mendoza and Littell, and how they conducted themselves in practice and at meets, was a great example to  the younger athletes, said Bertholf.

“(Mendoza and Littell) were on teams that finished first second and third at state. That is a great accomplishment,” Bertholf said.

The Winfield team also had three individual medalists — Carley Littell, Savanna Nickum and Chaney Littell.

“Carley really stepped up big for us on day two. She shot a personal best and had the second lowest score on the day,” said Bertholf. “Savanna Nickum, in the last few weeks, proved she is one of the best girls in the state. She had a great final two weeks. Chaney proved all season long that she was one of the top players in the state. I am very proud of this team and their accomplishments.”
