Arkansas City High School senior Brandy Barron is off to a solid start to the 2021 girls soccer season.
Barron recorded a hat trick Tuesday afternoon, scoring all three goals in the Lady Bulldogs’ 3-0 victory against arch rival Winfield on the pitch at Bulldog Stadium.
“Very pleased with the result and even more so with the way the girls played, especially for our first game of the season,” ACHS coach Joe Schwartz said.
“There’s still a lot to iron out, but with how hard the girls are working, I have no doubt we’ll keep improving our game.”
Barron went down in the short history of the program as the first player to record a hat trick. She also moved into the top spot all-time in goals scored at ACHS with seven.
“Brandy really showed what she can do tonight, but she’ll be the first to tell you she wouldn’t be able to do it without her teammates,” Schwartz said. “Everyone did their job tonight and played their role, even if it wasn’t glamorous.”
The teams played to a scoreless tie for nearly 30 minutes before Barron struck paydirt off a feed from senior Ellie Messenger.
Barron notched her second goal of the game with 4:19 left in the first half off a feed from junior Elle Abrams, giving the Lady Bulldogs (1-0) a 2-0 lead at the intermission.
It didn’t take long for Abrams to find Barron again, sending a pass to the forward for the hat trick just 1:10 into the second half.
Messenger and Abrams are tied for the most assists in program history with two. The Lady Bulldogs competed in the sport for the first time in 2013.
Ark City junior Josie Sigala recorded three saves in goal to notch the shutout.
Junior Grace Kelley recorded seven saves in goal for the Lady Vikings (0-1).
The Lady Bulldogs outshot Winfield 8-4.
