Builders move into first place with win

Southwestern College junior tight end Layke Hoffman secures the football for an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brad Cagle with 6:03 remaining in the first half Saturday against Kansas Wesleyan at Richard L. Jantz Stadium. KWU linebacker Justin Sullivan (43) is late with the coverage.

SALINA — The Southwestern College football team picked up a monumental win Saturday afternoon, defeating Kansas Wesleyan 42-21 snapping the Coyotes’ 25-game KCAC winning streak and giving them their first conference loss since October 2017.

The teams entered as the top two in the KCAC in defense and were one and three in the KCAC offensively.

The Builders (3-0, 3-0 KCAC) moved into a first-place tie with Bethel.

Southwestern pulled away with a 21-point third quarter.

Senior Keyshawn Wyatt opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Wyatt finished with a career-best performance, finishing with 150 yards.

The Coyotes (3-1, 2-1) responded with a seven-play, 72-yard drive capped by a 2-yard TD run by Roy Sanders midway through the second quarter. However, Southwestern took a 14-7 lead into the locker room on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brad Cagle to Layke Hoffman.

The Coyotes were poised to put some points on the board just before the half, marching down to the SC 6-yard line. But on fourth-and-goal at the 2-yard line, Sanders’ pass to Rico Nix fell to the turf.

On the opening drive of the second half, Cagle ran a 12-yard keeper into the end zone.

Junior Jaquils Coleman capped off a 52-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to put Southwestern up 28-7.

The Coyotes responded with a 57-yard touchdown run by Quincy Sandoval, running off just 19 seconds of game clock.

With momentum shifting and the Builders facing a third-and-13 on their next possession, Cagle kept the drive going with a 15-yard run. On the next play, Cagle sent the ball near the sideline to junior Keyshawn Jones on a screen, and Jones did the rest, romping 54 yards to paydirt. Jones finished with 104 yards on seven catches.

Kansas Wesleyan responded on a 16-yard TD pass by Isaiah Randalle to Stevie Williams on the final play of the third quarter.

Cagle hit Hoffman again, this time on an 11-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

Senior Grant Torgerson led the defense with eight tackles, including a sack.

Cagle was 17-of-23 passing for 247 yards, and added 77 yards on the ground. Sophomore Spensirr Howard caught four passes for 58 yards.

Cagle was named KCAC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts.

The Builders were slated to play Saturday at arch rival Friends. However, scheduling changes due to COVID-19 sent the Builders home for a 1 p.m. game against Saint Mary. The Spires (0-1, 0-1) have been able to play just one game thus far.
