EL DORADO — The Arkansas City and Winfield boys and girls cross country teams tuned up for this week’s league meet by competing Saturday at the El Dorado Invitational at El Dorado State Park.

The Ark City boys came within five points of winning the team title, finishing second behind Class 6A Garden City.

The Lady Vikings finished in a tie for second behind Emporia, but settled for third based on the sixth-runner tiebreaker.

Winfield junior Kayli Myers took home the third-place medal in the varsity girls race, finishing the 5K course in 20 minutes, 50:42 seconds. Elizabeth Willhite of Emporia took the title in 20:12.21, ahead of runner-up Chloe Clevenger of McPherson (20:45.18).

Five Bulldogs earned medals in the boys 5K race, led by senior Chase Mathews, who finished sixth in 17:27.76, a few seconds ahead of Winfield junior Corban Priest (17:35.39).

Sophomore Owen Seaton cracked the top 10 (17:45.89), leading a trio of Bulldogs including junior Manuel Leos (17:56.01) in 11th and sophomore Gabe Onelio (17:59.22) in 12th. Sophomore Brandon Klotz rounded out the team with a top-20 finish in 17th (18:15.12).

ACHS freshman Jasmine Calvo cracked the top 10 in the girls race in 21:50.57, one spot ahead of Winfield senior Gracelynn Benavides (21:58.29). Fellow frosh Natalia Onelio also earned a medal in 16th (22:16.73). Senior Amelia Onelio placed 31st (23:21.49) for the Lady Bulldogs, who didn’t have enough runners for a team score.

Sophomore Lauryn Turner cracked the top 20 for the Lady Vikings in 22:33.24. Sophomore Skylar Flower was 28th (23:11.01), senior Shino Inamura was 37th (23:53.4), sophomore Brooke Brogan just missed the top 50 (25:15.52) and junior Gracie Goyer was 55th (25:38.27).

Freshman Heath Reed placed 32nd (18:43.02) for the WHS boys, one spot ahead of junior teammate Mark Thompson (18:48.85). Junior Andru Owens was 36th (19:14.17), senior David Koller just missed the top 50 (20:25.91) and sophomore Jaden Brown was 61st (21:23.16)

The AV-CTL Division III & IV Championships are Thursday at Mulvane High School.

The AV-CTL Division I & II Championships are next Saturday at Centennial Park in Newton.

The Regional meets are set for Oct. 22. The Bulldogs compete in the 5A Regional at Lake Afton Park, while the Vikings battle at the 4A Regional at the Lakeview Recreation Area in Chanute.
