TOPEKA — The Southwestern College women’s tennis team captured the KCAC Tournament championship Saturday with a 4-2 upset of top-seeded Ottawa in the title match at the Kossover Tennis Center.
The Lady Builders (13-4) were winners by default at No. 3 doubles to begin the match, but Ottawa evened it with a win at No. 2 to put the focus on the No. 1 match.
The Southwestern duo of Samantha Loving and Catherine Coe was victorious 6-4 at the top spot.
Another default at No. 6 singles gave the Lady Builders a 2-0 margin. Caroline Henry made it a 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory, but the Lady Braves earned two points back at Nos. 3 and 1.
Leading 3-2, Alexa Powers clinched the victory for the Lady Builders with a 6-3 victory in the first set at No. 4 singles, then a tough back-and-forth 7-6 (4) triumph in the second.
Southwestern advanced to the title match Friday with a 4-3 victory against McPherson.
The Lady Builders clinched an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships, set to begin May 18 in Mobile, Ala.
