Tommy DeSalme, the all-time winningest coach in the history of the Cowley College men’s basketball program is leaving the school to become the new head coach at Hutchinson Community College.
DeSalme was voted the Plains District Coach of the Year, as well as the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Men ‘s Juco Coach of the Year for a second straight season.
DeSalme guided the 2020-21 Tigers to a season to remember. DeSalme led the Tigers to a region title for the first time in 64 years and helped Cowley to back-to-back conference titles. He led the Tigers all the way to the national title game and a runner-up finish, amassing a 24-5 record. The finish matched the best finish in school history (1952-53).
“Congratulations to Tommy and Eric (Nitsche) on a great season,” Cowley athletic director Shane Larson said. “Unfortunately, when you do really well, other schools want you to join them. Hutchinson is a great school and their athletic director, Josh Gooch, is doing a really good job with their athletic programs. We are sorry to see Tommy leave, but are also happy for him. We will be excited to announce our new coach for Tiger basketball in the near future.”
DeSalme, who will replace Steve Eck at Hutchinson, leaves Cowley with a 239-143 career record in 12 years at the school.
