Junior Vikings defend Patriot League title

HAYSVILLE — The Winfield Middle School wrestling team capped the 2019-20 season by capturing the title Dec. 14 at the Patriot League Championships at Haysville Middle School.

The Junior Vikings scored 292 points, 81 more than runner-up Benton-Circle.

Winfield took home nine individual titles, three silver medals and two bronze.

Brody Lindenman compiled a 5-0 tourney record en route to the 110-pound title and a 21-0 season record. Lindenman is 36-4 in two years of middle school.

Tallon Suttles went 4-0 to capture the 80-pound title and complete an undefeated 17-0 season.

Cole Wagman went 5-0 to claim the league title at 120 and cap a 20-1 season.

Cale Lindenman finished the season with a 6-4 record, but that included a 4-0 mark at the league meet en route to the 134-pound title.

Zane Swinford went 4-0 at 95 pounds to take the title and finish with a 16-1 record.

Sander Flower was 3-0 en route to the 105-pound title, finishing with a 16-1 record. Flower is 23-2 in two years.

Owen Suttles went 4-0 at 85 pounds for the title and ended with a 14-2 record.

Preston Groom took home the title at 155, finishing with a 3-0 tourney record, 16-2 overall.

Zerrick Vargas landed the 265-pound title with a 3-0 record, 11-1 for the season.

Eli Conklin advanced to the finals before finishing second with a 3-1 record at 90 pounds. He went 11-3 for the season. Andrew Beeson was the 100-pound league runner-up. He entered the meet undefeated before going 3-1 and finishing 19-1. Josh Law was 148-pound league runner-up with a 2-2 mark, finishing the season 5-3.

Third-place finishers included Jaxon Gatton (115) and Devin Halstead (180).

“This season we reloaded with several Winfield Wrestling Club kids that made the difference,” coach Kevin Hottiger said. “We only had three wrestlers from last season compete. As a team the last two years have been great, going on a run, 20-2 with two league championships. This team will be hard to beat next year.
