WELLINGTON — The Arkansas City High School boys cross country team captured the title Saturday at the Wellington Invitational at the Hargis Creek Watershed.

Led by senior Chase Matthews, who took home the individual title, Ark City placed five runners in the top 10.

“This year our top five boys have set a goal to compete for a league title and qualify for State this year,” ACHS coach Andrae Harper said. “They have put in a tremendous amount of work this past summer.”

AV-CTL D-II teams took the top four places in the boys race. Ark City finished ahead of Goddard-Eisenhower, Valley Center and Goddard.

“We did compete against three league teams — it was nice to see how we measure up to them now,” Harper said. “But we know it’s a long season and our primary focus is on improving and getting better each week. I believe this group can accomplish their goals — it won’t be easy, but with dedication and hard work they can be successful.”

Mathews completed the 5K course in 17 minutes, 44.5 seconds, more than four seconds ahead of runner-up Logan Libel of Eisenhower.

ACHS sophomore Owen Seaton tied his career-low time of 17:59.7 to finish fourth.

Junior Manuel Leos (18:33.5) and sophomore Gabriel Onelio (18:40) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, and sophomore Brandon Klotz rounded out the top 10 in 18:55.2.

The Lady Bulldogs had just three runners.

Freshman Jasmine Calvo took home a third-place medal in her first high school 5K race, finishing in 22:47.3.

Fellow freshman Natalia Onelio placed eighth in her first high school 5K meet in 23:49, and big sister Amelia Onelio, a senior, earned a medal in 14th in 24:31.8.

“We have had some trouble fielding girls teams the past several years,” Harper said. “I am glad we have a few more out this season. Our numbers overall have increased, but we are still struggling to find girls to come out and run. The ones we have out are motivated and excited to run. We are hopeful that we will be able to field a team this year if everyone stays healthy.”
