After playing a combined 81 minutes Saturday night in an overtime victory at Oklahoma Wesleyan, Southwestern College sophomores Cevin Clark (13) and Andrew O’Brien logged 70 minutes and combined for 38 points just 48 hours later in an 83-65 victory Monday night at Ottawa.

OTTAWA — A southwestern College men’s basketball team that used just three reserves in an emotional overtime victory Saturday at No. 4-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan trudged back out on the court just 48 hours later after a long bus ride to Ottawa.

It was business as usual, however, for the Moundbuilders, who pulled away in the second half for an 83-65 victory against the host Braves in KCAC action Monday night.

Every Southwestern starter played a minimum of 33 points Saturday, but Cevin Clark and Andrew O’Brien still managed to spent 35 minutes apiece on the court Monday, combining for 38 points on 12-of-24 shooting from the floor.

The Builders (14-3, 6-5 KCAC) shot just 32.4% in the first half Monday (12 of 37), including 5 of 17 from 3-point range. However, the Southwestern defense forced nine first-half turnovers and the team led 33-27 at the break.

The Builders shot it better after the break, hitting 15 of 27, including 5 of 12 from the arc. But a 15-of-17 effort from the foul line after halftime allowed Southwestern to pull away.

O’Brien recorded a double-double by halftime with 14 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 4 of 5 from 3-point range in the half. He finished with 16 points, 17 boards and four assists.

Clark went 8 of 8 from the foul line and led Southwestern with 22 points,

Zhahidi Robinson added 12 points in 26 minutes off the bench. Cooper Pierce and Deng Bol chipped in 11 points each for the Builders, who finished 42.2% from the floor (27 of 64), including 10 of 29 from long range and 19 of 23 from the foul line.

The Braves (10-7, 6-5) used an 11-0 run midway through the first half to turn a 9-9 tie into a 20-9 lead.

O’Brien took over, stopping the drought with a basket off a feed from Clark, then connecting on back-to-back 3-pointers. Basket by Robinson and Clark cut the deficit to one, and O’Brien buried a 3-pointer with 2:42 left in the half to give the Builders a 24-22 advantage, their first lead since 5-4. Southwestern scored the final seven points of the half.

Back-to-back treys by Pierce and Clark — the Arkansas City Connection — gave the Builders their biggest lead at that point, 65-48, with 7:41 remaining.

Four consecutive free throws thanks to a technical foul on Ottawa’s Jackson Mallory boosted the lead to 19, 82-63, with 2:07 left.

Andre Jackson led Ottawa with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Tristen Hill had an 11-point, 13-rebound double-double, and Joe Johnson II also tallied 11 points for the Braves, who finished 43.5% from the floor (27 of 62).

The victory was No. 298 in the Southwestern career of head coach Matt O’Brien, who needs two more to reach 300.

The Builders are slated to return home at 5 p.m. Saturday against last-place Sterling. The Warriors (2-16, 0-12) were the victims of a determined Oklahoma Wesleyan team Monday in a 120-62 rout.

The Lady Braves (6-10, 4-8) spotted Southwestern a Kewaysha Layup, then went on a 17-2 run spanning the first and second quarters before building a 34-12 halftime advantage.
