The Cowley College men’s basketball team fell behind early Wednesday at home against No. 16-ranked Coffeyville could never recover in an 87-71 defeat.
Coffeyville scored the first 10 points, forcing Cowley coach Donnie Jackson to spend two timeouts in the first three minutes of play.
The Tigers (11-8, 5-8 Jayhawk D-II) appeared to settle down and pulled to within 12-9, but after eight straight points by the Red Ravens (15-4, 9-4), Jackson was forced to burn another timeout.
Following the third 3-pointer of the first half by Coffeyville’s Sotirios Nafpliotis, Cowley trailed 36-21, and Jackson used his final timeout. The Tigers went into halftime trailing 49-29.
Cowley outscored the Red Ravens 42-38 in the second half, but it was too little too late.
“Coffeyville made us look like a JV team,” Jackson said. “We had no competitive fire or fight all night long.”
The Red Ravens shot 60.7% from the floor and went 14 of 26 from 3-point range.
Nafpliotis led six Coffeyville players in double figures with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the arc. Hayden Brittingham added 11 points, six rebounds and five assists while finishing off slam dunks on three straight second-half possessions.
Mekhi Cameron led all scorers with 18 points for the Tigers, while Jeff Nwankwo came off the bench to finish with 15 points and eight rebounds.
“Jeff was the lone bright spot for us,” Jackson said. “He played hard and showed what he can be.”
The Tigers play at 3 p.m. today at No. 11-ranked Dodge Cit. The Conquistadors (14-4, 10-2) are led by Jason Edwards, who is averaging 22.3 points per game.
“We have to move on quickly and focus on Dodge City,” Jackson said. “They are on top of the league for a reason.”
