Lady Builders swept

Southwestern College freshman Gina Hernandez takes a mighty cut Tuesday against Mid America Christian at the Broadway Sports Complex.

Home has not been kind to the Southwestern College softball team.

The Lady Builders were shut out in both games of Tuesday afternoon’s nonconference doubleheader, falling to Mid America Christian 1-0 in the opener and 9-0 in the nightcap at the Broadway Sports Complex.

Southwestern (1-3) has lost three of four since the season began on Feb. 25.

Senior MacKenzie Lyons was locked in a pitchers’ duel with Regan Martin in the opener.

The two hurlers tossed scoreless softball through five complete innings.

The Lady Evangels scored the only run of the game off Southwestern reliever Hannah Foltz in the top of the sixth on a leadoff single by Kylie Stubbs, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

Lyons allowed just two hits and two walks, with three strikeouts before giving way to Foltz, who struck out two and walked none in two innings of work.

Martin finished off a complete-game three-hit shutout, giving up a lone walk while striking out five. Mid America Christian player error free softball behind her.

Lyons doubled, and Cady Norton and Loren Wright had Southwestern’s other two hits.

Katie Long tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout for Mid America in the nightcap.

Southwestern’s only hit of the game was a two-out single to right by Alexis Gouyton.

Long walked one and struck out 10 in the gem, which ended after five innings due to the run rule.

Kally Henson started in the circle for the Lady Builders, but couldn’t get out of the second inning.

Already leading 2-0, the Lady Evangels sent 11 batters to the plate in the five-run second inning.

Hanson was touched for seven runs, six earned, on eight hits, with one strikeout and no walks. Ryleigh Branstetter walked three and gave up a hit in 1/3 of an inning before Foltz came on to toss two-hit ball in the final three innings, with a walk and two strikeouts.

Mikaylee Allen, Kassie Martin, Olivia Roberts and Faith Hollingsworth had two hits apiece for the Lady Evangels, who banged out 11 hits, three for extra bases.

The Lady Builders are home for a 2 p.m. Friday twinbill against Briar Cliff.
