The Winfield High School wrestling team returned home Thursday night, dropping a 48-24 decision to Class 4A No. 4-ranked Augusta in an AV-CTL D-III dual at Ollie Thomas Gymnasium.
The Vikings gave up 24 points in forfeits at four weights, which spelled the difference.
The Orioles have four grapplers ranked in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, but needed the forfeit points to escape with the victory.
Winfield’s lone ranked wrestler, senior Braden Ledford, needed barely a minute to pin Austin Duncan in the first period of their 126-pound bout.
Sophomore Kody Brenn also recorded a first-period fall, pinning Thomas Johnson at 160 pounds.
Junior heavyweight Jackson Angle pinned Jase Christiansen early in the second period.
Senior Eli Lynch was victorious at 220 via 6-5 decision against Holt Williams. Junior Parker Smith recorded an 8-2 victory against Gabe Kant at 182.
Just two of Augusta’s ranked wrestlers competed due to forfeits. Garrett Davis, ranked No. 1 in 4A at 170 pounds, had to settle for a 9-1 major decision against Trevin Biddle. Grady Fox, ranked No. 4 at 120, won his match by fall.
The Vikings were scheduled to compete Friday and today at the Newton Tournament of Champions.
