NORTH NEWTON — The Southwestern College men’s soccer team dominated Bethel on Saturday with two goals in the first 12 minutes, but allowed a goal as time was expiring in the first half. However, the Builders added an insurance goal in the second half to earn a much-needed 3-1 KCAC road victory.
Fabio Schneider opened up the scoring for the Builders (6-4-2, 3-3-1 KCAC) off a beautiful feed from Mamadou Diarra just six minutes in.
Nalan Kentner scored his second goal of the year just six minutes later off an assist by Lucas Travis.
Just as the first half was coming to an end, the Threshers (6-5, 3-3) scored on a breakaway by Juan Nicoletti with just two seconds left in the half.
Southwestern continued to play strong defensively in the second half and allowed just a single shot on net after the break.
The Builders had just one shot on goal as well, but Diarra’s run to goal was strong and effective. It served as a de facto game-sealer, as it gave Southwestern a two-goal lead with less than two minutes remaining.
Joshua Eibl recorded two saves in goal for Southwestern. Colton Rothwell stopped three shots for the Threshers.
The Builders play at 3 p.m. Saturday at McPherson.
Lady Builders 2, Lady Threshers 1
NORTH NEWTON — The Lady Builders overcame a one-goal deficit Saturday to topple Bethel 2-1.
After a scoreless first half, Sydney Brown put the Lady Threshers (6-4-2, 2-2-2 KCAC) on the board in the 55th minute.
Ana Llanos picked up her second goal of the season on an assist by Bryanna Kuhn just six minutes later.
It did not take much time for Southwestern to take the lead. Kuhn brilliantly converted on a nifty assist from Lillian Grisso just seven minutes later for the game-winner.
Mallorie Lund recorded three saves in goal for the Lady Builders (7-3-1, 5-2).
Southwestern plays at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at McPherson.
