Saturday was a beautiful day for the Mike Kirkland Southwestern Relays at Richard L. Jantz Stadium, with Cowley College joining the host Moundbuilders.
The Tigers captured gold medals in five events, while Southwestern collected three golds in individual competition along with one relay.
Lacie Lancaster and Kirstin Hackney led the Lady Builders to a 1-2 finish in the 1,500-meter run in 5 minutes, 10.48 seconds, a bit more than two seconds ahead of her teammate (5:12.77).
Austin Schaeffer won the men’s 1,500 for the Builders in 4:02.81, less than a second ahead of Cowley’s Aidan Wells (4:03.56).
Cowley’s Mercedes Glover won the javelin, throwing the spear 35.82 meters, just ahead of Southwestern’s Gabby Murchison (34.6m).
Kirstin Hackney won the women’s 800 in 2:27.82 for the Lady Builders.
Kentayshija Pruitt, Rachel Booker, Meliah Hanna and Kyaj Hill joined forces to win the 4x400 relay for the Lady Builders in 4:04.83.
Basheer Suied took the men’s 3,000 steeplechase in 10:59.9 for the Tigers. Teammate Riley Hunter was tops in the pole vault, clearing 4.3 meters.
Isabella Kupka won the women’s 400 in 57.54 seconds for the Lady Tigers. Teammate Abby Rueschhoff cleared 10.98 meters to win the triple jump.
Pruitt was runner-up in the women’s 400 hurdles in a photo finish (1:06.48), just one one-hundredths of a second behind Aubry Grame of Bethel (1:06.47). LaShaé Smith was runner-up in the women’s 100 hurdles.
Other second-place finishes for the Builders included Maliki Pope in the 5,000, one spot ahead of teammate Andrew Mitchell; and Hill in the women’s 200, one spot ahead of Hanna.
Both of Southwestern’s ‘A’ relay teams also were runners-up.
Second-place finishers for the Tigers included Mario Garcia-Arroyo in the men’s discus, Genesis Bautista in the women’s long jump and Jamilet Bautista Infante in the women’s shot put.
Former Winfield High School standout Julien Washington led the Tigers to a 2-3-4 finish in the men’s hammer, ahead of teammates Abner Johnson and Jacob Creswell.
The Builders compete Thursday and Friday at the KCAC Championships in Hillsboro. The Tigers compete Friday and Saturday at the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference Championships in Coffeyville.
