Brothers Oakley and Dawson O’Donnell repeated as league champions Monday at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II Boys Tennis Championships at the Louderback Family Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs finished third, behind league champion Andover and runner-up Andover Central.
Jacob Arnett and Aidan Brantley finished fifth in doubles play with a 3-1 record.
As the No. 1 seed, the O’Donnells earned a first-round bye and rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 quarterfinal victory against the Valley Center duo of Edgar Villarreal and Gabriel Shaffer.
An even easier 6-0, 6-1 semifinal trouncing of the Andover tandem of Clayton Vinson and Jeremiah Rather sent the O’Donnells to the title match, where they jumped out early in a 6-1, 6-4 triumph against Blake Wilson and Cameron Strickland of Andover Central.
Arnett and Brantley’s only setback was a 6-3, 6-3 quarterfinal loss to Vinson and Rather.
The Ark City duo outlasted Andover’s other doubles team of Charles Landers and Gentry Brown 3-6, 6-3 (8) for fifth.
“Their loss in the quarters to Vinson-Rather was tough,” ACHS coach Aaron O’Donnell said. “They had beaten them earlier in the year. They will need to beat one or both of these teams to secure a spot at State.”
Isaac Pieper finished eighth in singles with a 1-3 record, defeating Carson Jobe of Goddard-Eisenhower in the first round.
Chantz Moore placed 10th with a 1-2 mark. His lone victory was a 9-7 triumph against Valley Center’s Nolan Jones on the backside.
“They finished off a tough day of tennis in singles about where they should. They didn't take any bad losses or get any great wins,” O'Donnell said. “They played some opponents tougher than they had previously, so there was some progress made in this way.”
The Class 5A Regional Championships are set for 10 a.m. Friday. Andover, Andover Central, Bishop Carroll, Goddard, Eisenhower, Kapaun Mt. Carmel and Pittsburg join the Bulldogs at the Andover District Tennis Complex.
