Double Trouble

Arkansas City High School senior Chris Arnett gets to a drop shot with a backhand as freshman Oakley O’Donnell watches Friday against Shaemus Cowan and Bruce Meeker of Kapaun Mt. Carmel at the Class 5A Regional Championships at the Louderback Family Tennis Center. The No. 5 seed entering Regionals, Arnett and O’Donnell upset the fourth-seeded Kapaun duo en route to a third-place finish and a berth in the KSHSAA Class 5A State Championships, set for May 14-15 at Maize South High School.

Arkansas City High School senior Chris Arnett will end his high school career at the Big Show.

Freshman Oakley O’Donnell is just starting his.

The Bulldogs’ No. 1 doubles team finished third Saturday at the Class 5A Regional Boys Tennis Championships at the Louderback Family Tennis Center.

Arnett and O’Donnell will take a 22-8 record to the KSHSAA Class 5A State Championships, set for May 14-15 at Maize South High School.

The No. 5 seed entering Regionals, the Ark City duo opened Regional play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Dylan Aldrete and Spencer Russell of Goddard-Eisenhower.

Arnett and O’Donnell then gutted out a marathon 6-7 (4), 6-2 (11) upset of fourth-seeded Shaemus Cowan and Bruce Meeker of Kapaun Mt. Carmel to clinch their berth in the State meet.

The ACHS duo survived three match points in the 10-point super-tiebreaker and snapped an 11-11 tie by taking the final two points.

That set up a semifinal match with top-seeded Garrison Wright and Grayson Wright of Maize South, who defeated the Ark City tandem 6-0, 6-3 en route to the Regional title.

Undeterred, Arnett and O’Donnell wrapped up play with a 6-1, 6-3 upset of third-ranked Landon Eskridge and Mitchell Krumm of Kapaun for the third-place medals.

Isaiah Torres was victorious in his first Regional battle in singles competition, defeating ninth-seeded Cole Albert of Goddard 6-1, 6-1.

That set up a quarterfinal battle against top-seeded Harris Kossover of Maize South, who dropped his first set of the day in a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

The loss sent eighth-seeded Torres to the consolation bracket and a must-win scenario to reach State. However, he dropped a 6-3, 6-0 setback to fourth-seeded Paul Jittawait of Andover, ending his season.

Brodie Perdue held the No. 14 seed and was eliminated in the first round with a 6-1, 6-2 loss to fourth-seeded Paul Jittawait of Andover.

Jacob Arnett and Aidan Brantley were seeded 13th in the doubles tourney and dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to fourth seeded Shaemus Cowan and Bruce Meeker of Kapaun.

“Arnett is a sophomore and Brantley is a freshman, so this duo has a bright future if they put in court time in the offseason and summer,” ACHS coach Aaron O’Donnell said.
