CHANUTE — Winfield High School senior Kyan Towles recorded a natural hat trick with three first-half goals and punched in a fourth goal in the second half Monday afternoon, helping the Vikings to an 8-2 rout at Chanute in nonleague boys soccer action.
Junior Zach Hammar also notched a hat trick for the Vikings (5-4).
“Really happy to come away from Chanute with this kind of victory,” WHS coach Charles Osen said. “All the excuses were there for us: shorthanded, long trip, unfamiliar opponent and surroundings, hot, windy and so on, but we overcame that. The guys didn’t fall into that trap. Missed some early opportunities, but once Kyan got that first goal, we were off and running.”
Towles put the Vikings on the board less than 10 minutes in on an unassisted goal, and senior Julien Washington made it 2-0 off a feed from senior Drake Lowe in the 16th minute.
Towles notched the hat trick and junior Hammar made it 5-0 with less than five minutes left in the first half.
The Blue Comets (4-3-2) broke through with 2:23 left in the half and trailed 5-1 at the break.
Chanute scored 10 minutes into the second half, but Towles added his fourth off a feed from freshman Gabriel Tapia five minutes later. Hammar scored on a penalty kick midway through the half, then recorded his hat trick with 26 seconds remaining.
“I thought our midfield was really good,” Osen said. “Zach Hammar, Julien Washington, Drake Lowe and Trevor Shelton had good spacing most of the night and played complimentary soccer. They seem to be getting into a groove.”
The Vikings were set to play at home Tuesday night against El Dorado.
