Lady Builders end season on a skid

Southwestern College senior Sydni Fulks is one of seven starters on the softball team who expect to graduate, leaving a huge void for the Lady Builders, who ended the season with six straight losses.

WICHITA — The Southwestern College softball team ended the season on a down note, dropping both games of Tuesday afternoon’s KCAC doubleheader at arch rival Friends.

Southwestern lost the opener 3-1 and was shut out 7-0 in the nightcap, ending the season with six straight losses.

The Lady Builders (10-27, 4-20 KCAC) scored their only run of the afternoon in their very first at-bat. Sydni Fulks led off with a walk and Kayleen Gonzalez walked one out later, and MacKenzie Lyons followed with a double to right. However, Friends pitcher Hali Walters escaped the two-on, one-out jam.

Jecca Autry reached on a one-out infield single in the second inning, but Walters no-hit the Lady Builders the rest of the way, retiring 11 of 12 until Gonzalez led off the sixth with a walk. Walters struck out nine and walked five.

Lyons suffered the tough-luck loss in the circle, scattering six hits — just two after the second inning after the Lady Falcons (29-14, 18-6) scored two runs in the first inning and one in the second on a two-out home run by Makenna Mitchell. Lyons struck out one and walked two.

Southwestern managed six hits in the nightcap, but stranded seven runners on base.

Laila Spracklen tossed six innings of four-hit ball with eight strikeouts and one walk for Friends before giving way to Ashlyn Jacobs, who escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the seventh.

Hannah Foltz went the distance in the circle for Southwestern, finishing with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Lady Falcons scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning and Hannah Lang hit a solo home run in the second to stake Friends to a 2-0 lead. The Lady Falcons put together three singles, a walk and an error in a three-run fourth, and Savannah Jackson capped the scoring with a two-run home run in the fifth.

Fulks, Foltz, Lyons, Gonzalez, Cady Norton, Cassidy Schubert and Alexis Gouyton all are seniors who played for the final time in SC uniforms.

Foltz, a Douglass High School standout, and Lyons combined to start 26 games in the circle. Fulks also led the Lady Builders with a .318 batting average. Fulks, Norton, Lyons and Gonzalez had the top four batting averages for the Lady Builders.
