Viking quartet sets PRs at State Championships

LENEXA — Winfield High School senior Caden Roark ended his high school career by qualifying in three events at the two-day KSHSAA Class 5-4-3-2-1A State Championships that wrapped up Saturday at the Shawnee Mission District Aquatic Center.

AV-CTL foe Andover Central captured the 5-4-3-2-1A State team title.

The Vikings sent four swimmers to compete in four events at the Big Show.

Roark cracked the top 10 in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing the event in a personal-best 5 minutes, 7.23 seconds.

He tied for 14th in the 100 butterfly in 56.91 seconds.

Bryce Dolch capped his season by cracking the top 20 in the 500 free in a personal-best 5:29.77, shaving 14.71 seconds from his previous best after cutting 10 seconds off a week ago at the league meet.

Albert Compala competed in individual competition, placing 24th in the 200 individual medley in a personal-best 2:19.27.

The Vikings placed 21st in the 400 free relay. Roark, Dolch and Compala teamed with Mark Thompson to finishing in 3:48.59.
