ANDOVER — Coaches don’t often talk about “statement games,” asserting that all games are meant to send a statement.

Tuesday night’s foray into Andover Central, however, might be an exception.

The Bulldogs continued to use solid defense and a team-first attitude to pull away for a 56-45 triumph in AV-CTL D-II road action.

Ark City fell to the Jaguars 63-32 last season in Andover. Central swept the 2019-20 home-and-away series with a 58-39 victory in The Dawg Pound.

Not this time.

After a nip-and-tuck first quarter, the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1 AV-CTL D-II) held Andover Central to nine second-quarter points to forge a 27-21 lead at halftime.

Ark City maintained a three-possession lead into the fourth quarter before pulling away for good.

The Bulldogs spread the wealth, with three players scoring in double figures. They also hit their freebies — connecting on 21 of 26 from the foul line, including a 12-of-14 effort down the stretch.

Brock Merz was 8 of 8 from the line, sinking 6 of 6 in the fourth quarter en route to a team-high 15 points. Trevor Pierce scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half, while Doug Stewart tallied nine of his 12 points in the second half, connecting on a pair of 3-pointers in the game.

Skyler Clevenger led all players with 16 points for the Jaguars (1-5, 1-3), who were 6 of 11 from the line.
