BUHLER — The Winfield High School football team saw its season come to an end Friday night in a 59-20 loss to No. 2-ranked Buhler in the KSHSAA Class 4A Sectionals.

“Moving forward, we will continue to build on the cultural changes within the football family,” WHS coach Monty Lewis said. “I think we’ve come a long way since Summer Pride began last June.”

The Vikings (4-6) stayed with Buhler for much of the first quarter. However, the Crusaders (9-1) reeled off 49 straight points behind 347 yards of total offense before Winfield could score again.

Kody Brenn hauled in a 22-yard pass from tailback Ar’mon Acosta with 2:09 left in the first quarter to pull the Vikings even 7-7.

By the time Winfield scored again, on a 66-yard run by Acosta, the Crusaders held a 56-14 lead.

“When we tied the game, I was still unsure where we were mentally,” Lewis said. “I feel like I could have done more to re-settle our players — that’s on me. Buhler is the best team I’ve seen all season — they look like State champs to me.”

The Vikings capped the scoring on a 12-yard keeper by quarterback Riley Yingling.

Buhler tailback Sam Elliott amassed 143 yards and four touchdowns on just 14 carries, including a 71-yard scoring jaunt with 1:46 left in the first quarter that gave Buhler the lead for good.

Acosta gained 150 yards on 19 carries in his final game in a Vikings uniform. He also completed 3 of 4 passes for 52 yards and the TD. Yingling was 5-of-10 passing for 18 yards in his final high school game.

Buhler quarterback Bradley Neill was a thrifty 8-of-10 passing for 198 yards and three touchdowns.

In addition to Acosta and Yingling, other seniors on the roster include Kyan Towles, Lance Austin, Eli Heger, Nyle Franklin, Koal Meier, Gavin Turner, Daryus Reynolds, Parker Smith, Mason Widener, Tanner Bruce, Jackson Jellings and Jackson Angle.

“We’ll learn from the negatives, but focus on all the positives from the season,” Lewis said. “I want to be clear — our program will continue to ascend and it will be squarely from the shoulders of the 2021 senior class.”

Buhler advanced to the 4A Sectionals and a meeting with Mulvane next Friday in Buhler. The Wildcats (8-2) nipped McPherson 18-16 on Friday.
