BURDEN — The Cedar Vale/Dexter softball team took advantage of Mother Nature to come back for an 18-8 victory against Sedan in the completed of a suspended game Thursday.
The original game, the second game of an April 22 doubleheader at Sedan, was suspended when thunderstorms rolled in and the host Lady Blue Devils leading 7-5 after two innings.
The victory clinched the South Central Border League regular-season title for the Lady Spartans (14-1, 13-1 SCBL).
Cedar Vale/Dexter wasted little time, scoring 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning.
The Lady Spartans took advantage of four consecutive walks, and Mandi Ford and Angelia Becker followed with singles
Kaitlynn Anderson settled down to limit the Lady Blue Devils (5-8, 5-7) to six earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out 15. She helped herself at the plate despite going hitless by drawing four walks and scoring four runs.
Jenna Richardson added three hits and a walk while scoring twice and driving in three. Ford went 3 for 4, while Essie Boatman was a perfect 2 for 2 with a run and two RBI.
The big blow for the Lady Spartans before the rains came was a three-run home run by Jasmine Helvy in the top of the second inning.
The Lady Spartans then played at Central of Burden in a highly-anticipated matchup of the top two teams in the South Central Border League.
The host Lady Raiders took advantage of five CVD errors and pulled away with a 12-run fifth inning to run-rule Cedar Vale/Dexter 17-6.
Central survived seven errors.
The teams traded three-run first innings and one-run second innings before the Lady Raiders (12-3, 11-3) scored one in the third.
CVD retook the lead 6-5 in the top of the fourth. Anderson, Helvy and Kyndall Randall hit consecutive singled to load the bases, but the Lady Spartans could only score twice when Central escaped further damage with a double play.
Maddy Brogan stroked a three-run walk-off single to cap Central’s 10-run fifth and end the game.
Despite combining for 23 runs, the teams combined for just 17 hits because of 12 errors and a combined 12 walks.
Averi Hilario hit a two-run home run for the Lady Raiders that tied the game 3-3 in the first. Emma Garrison and Reagan Cady added two hits apiece for Central.
Helvy went 2 for 3 and scored three runs for the Lady Spartans. Randall went 2 for 2 with a walk, while Kyler Magnus added two hits.
Anderson took the loss in the circle, her first of the season. She allowed nine hits and nine walks, with five strikeouts, and 11 of the 17 runs were earned.
Haven Wunderlich earned the victory for Central, giving up eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Three of the six runs she allowed were earned.
