CVD, Central split twinbill

CEDAR VALE — The Cedar Vale/Dexter softball team is South Central Border League champions.

In a battle between the top two teams in the league, the Lady Spartans defeated Central of Burden 16-6 to split Monday’s doubleheader.

The visiting Lady Raiders took the opener 14-8, the second time in a row that Central defeated the Lady Spartans.

Kaitlynn Anderson earned the victory in the circle in Monday’s nightcap. She allowed just three hits, but gave up six runs on three walks, with 12 strikeouts in the game, called after 5 1/3 innings due to the run-rule.

Leading 14-6, Cedar Vale/Dexter ended it in walk-off fashion. Grace Henderson drew a one-out walk and Anderson followed with a two-run home run off Central pitcher Haven Wunderlich.

The Lady Spartans (15-2, 13-1 SCBL) broke it open early with a nine-run first inning.

Cedar Vale/Dexter sent 14 batters to the plate, sparked by Anderson’s leadoff triple. Jasmine Helvy followed with a two-run home run over the fence in left. Anderson and Helvy later added back-to-back doubles.

Randall and Helvy scored on an error in the bottom of the third to give the Lady Spartans an 11-0 lead.

The Lady Raiders (13-4, 11-3) responded with a five-run fourth inning. Morgan Cook stroked a two-run double and Averi Hilario followed a walk to Wunderlich with a single.

Kyler Magnus doubled home a pair of runs in a three-run fifth for the Lady Spartans.

Wunderlich allowed 16 runs, but just nine were earned, on 15 hits and five walks, with four strikeouts.

Central jumped on Anderson for three runs in the top of the first inning of the opener. Cook drove in two with a single and Hilario followed with an RBI single.

The Lady Spartans scored two in their half of the first on a run-scoring double by Helvy and an RBI single by Magnus.

Cedar Vale/Dexter took a 4-3 lead in the second on an error and an RBI single by Richardson. However, the Lady Raiders tied it in the third when Mallory Bergeron walked, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.

Central scored five in the top of the fourth, four of them on an error with two out. Emma Garrison stroked a two-run double and Cook added a double.

The Lady Spartans answered with four of their own in the bottom half on a double by Anderson and an RBI single by Helvy. Magnus doubled and later scored on an error.

Central took the lead for good with a four-run sixth, all with two out. Cook tripled in the inning.

Wunderlich went the distance in the circle for Central, giving up eight runs on 13 hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Anderson was charged with eight earned runs on 11 hits and three walks, with 13 strikeouts. The Lady Spartans did not commit an error in the nightcap.
