GODDARD — The Arkansas City High School boys basketball team jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead, but needed every one of those points to hold off host Goddard-Eisenhower 59-58 in AV-CTL D-II action Friday night.

The Bulldogs (12-5, 5-4 AV-CTL D-II) led 30-19 at halftime and 41-29 entering the fourth quarter.

Eisenhower put together a 29-point fourth quarter before the Bulldogs escaped.

Doug Stewart put Ark City up by four with a pair of free throws, but Nick Hogan buried a 3-pointer on the other end with eight seconds remaining to make it a one-point game.

The Tigers (4-13, 3-6) were forced to foul, and Gabe Welch stepped to the line and coolly sank both freebies.

The Ark City defense defended the 3-point perimeter, allowing the Tigers to drive in for an uncontested layup in the final seconds before the Bulldogs were able to hold the ball out of bounds as the final buzzer sounded.

Ark City sank 12 of 16 free throws down the stretch and 22 of 28 overall.

Brock Merz led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Haden O’Toole came off the bench, scoring five of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. Stewart finished 4 of 4 from the line in a 12-point effort. Trevor Pierce sank 4 of 4 from the line in the fourth quarter of a nine-point game.

Hogan led all scorers with 21 points for the Tigers, who were 12 of 14 from the line — 10 of 11 down the stretch. Tyler Roth scored all 12 of his points in the second half, successfully converting a pair of 1-and-1s in the fourth quarter.
