Lady Tigers top Pratt to advance to quarterfinals

Cowley College sophomore guard Kalyne Daniels is fouled on a layup Monday night against Pratt in the first round of the Region VI Tournament in W.S. Scott Auditorium. The Lady Tigers advanced with a 79-65 victory and are scheduled to meet top-seeded Hutchinson tonight in the quarterfinals.

The No. 8-seeded Cowley College women’s basketball team defeated No. 9-seed Pratt 79-65 in the first round of the Region VI Tournament on Monday at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

The Lady Tigers (15-8), who have won five of their past six, advanced to play at 5:30 p.m. today at top-seeded Hutchinson in the tourney quarterfinals. The Lady Dragons (18-4) earned a first-round bye.

Cowley held the Lady Beavers (8-14) to 3-of-18 shooting from the floor in the first quarter to take a 16-8.

The lead grew to 40-27 at the end of the first half by to limiting Pratt to 27-percent shooting.

Cowley sophomore Seanna Boltz went 4 of 6 from 3-point range in the third quarter as the lead grew to 61-44 heading into the final quarter.

“Seanna is a streaky shooter, but when she is on she is really hard to guard,” Cowley coach Todd Clark said.

Pratt opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run to pull to within 61-54. However, following a timeout by the Lady Tigers, Cowley answered with a 9-0 run to regain control of the game.

“We got a little comfortable and lost our heads a bit, but we got more serious about things after the timeout and were finally able to finish off the game,” Clark said.

Boltz finished with a game-high 22 points and moved into 18th place on Cowley’s all-time scoring list with 763 career points. Sophomore Teagan Brouwer recorded her first career double-double, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

“Teagan was really aggressive and did a good job going after rebounds,” Clark said. “I thought her teammates did a good job of finding her in the right spots.”

Jaylin Taylor went 5 of 10 from 3-point range and led the Lady Beavers with 19 points.

Cowley must knock off a Hutchinson team that defeated the Lady Tigers 84-61 on Feb. 17 in Ark City.

“We have got to lace them up and play,” Clark said. “I hope we are up for the challenge.”
