KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Southwestern College women’s basketball team got down early, then could only stand by and watch Avila hit free throws down the stretch en route to a 72-52 KCAC victory Thursday night.

The Lady Builders (1-10, 0-5 KCAC) lost their seventh straight.

Avila used a 15-0 first-quarter run to turn a 5-5 tie into a 22-5 advantage. Southwestern went 5:25 without scoring until Denisha Anderson’s layup with 3:23 left in the quarter.

The Lady Eagles (7-1, 5-1), who pulled into a three-way tie for first place in the KCAC, led 40-27 at halftime.

Southwestern actually shot the ball slightly better, 37.8% to 35.7%. But the Lady Builders were outrebounded 48-38 including a staggering 28 boards from the offensive glass for Avila. Southwestern also committed 31 turnovers to 16 for the Lady Eagles.

Atyanna Freeman led the Lady Builders with 12 points, while Kewaysha Alsup added 10 points off the bench. Tynica Gilmore was Southwestern’s leading rebounded with seven.

The Lady Builders outscored Avila 24-4 in bench points.

Matti Morgan led four starters in double figures with 20 points, and just missed a triple-double with 13 rebounds and nine steals for Avila. Ainsley Tolson added 18 points, Tiffany Davenport had 16 and Tatiana McCree chipped in 12.

The Lady Builders return home at 3 p.m. today against Bethany. The Lady Swedes (9-3, 5-1) are one of the three teams tied for first in the KCAC following Thursday’s 66-57 victory Thursday against Ottawa.
