STERLING — The Southwestern College men’s basketball team began their quest for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference title Saturday night with a dominant 94-70 victory at Sterling.

The early part of the first half saw four lead changes and three ties when Deng Bol drove in for back-to-back layups to give Southwestern a 23-21 lead. The Moundbuilders (7-0, 1-0 KCAC) shot 46% (18 of 39) from the floor in building a 47-34 halftime lead.

Southwestern never trailed again, building the advantage as high as 14 before settling for a 13-point halftime lead.

Sterling’s Nick Price buried a jumper and a 3-pointer for a personal 5-0 run to cut the deficit to six, 53-47, with 12:50 remaining. John Barnhill’s layup made it a four-point game when Cevin Clark drained a 3-pointer on the other end.

Two more treys by Clark, the former Arkansas City High School All-State standout, built Southwestern’s lead back to 12, 62-50.

Clark drove in for a layup with 10:08 left to cap a personal 11-point run.

Cooper Pierce, another ACHS standout, buried a trey with 37 seconds left to give the Builders their biggest lead at the game’s conclusion.

Zhahido Robinson led four players in double figures with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 3 of 6 from the arc for Southwestern. Clark scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half and Deng Bol added 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Rance Kendrick was 6 of 6 from the foul line and tallied 16 points in 21 minutes off the bench, while Andrew O’Brien led the defense with 10 rebounds.

Daven Dunbar led four Warriors in double figures with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Nick Price, Jalen Jackson and Colby Baker added 12 points apiece for the Warriors (3-5, 0-2).

The Builders were slated to return home Tuesday to face Tabor. The Bluejays (2-3, 0-2) lost 67-55 at home Saturday against Ottawa.
