Gold for Lindemayer-Gomes

Cowley College freshman Thais Lindemayer-Gomes clears the bar Thursday en route to the national championship  in the pole vault at the NJCAA D-II Outdoor National Championships in El Dorado.

EL DORADO — Cowley College freshman Thais Lindemayer Gomes, the NJCAA Division I national indoor champion in the pole vault, made it a clean sweep by capturing the outdoor national title in the event Thursday at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the BG Products Veterans Sports Complex on the campus of Butler Community College. 

Gomes cleared a personal best 11-11 3/4 in the event to earn 10 team points. Fellow freshman Annie Kelley placed fifth in the pole vault (10-6), while Bayley Holt finished in a tie for seventh (10-0). Both Kelley and Holt earned USTFCCA All-American honors.

The Lady Tigers 4x800-meter relay team of Wrylee Dickard, Naomi Similus, Taylor Williams and Anna Keller placed third in 9 minutes, 19.5 seconds to earn NJCAA All-American honors.

The Lady Tigers were third place after the first day of competition. Cowley has 21 team points and trails only New Mexico Junior College (30) and Iowa Central Community College (28).

Sophomore Trent Lawrence nearly joined Gomes as a national champion in the pole vault, finishing as the national runner-up in the men’s event by clearing 15-5. Lawrence received NJCAA All-American honors for his efforts.

Cowley freshman Hristo Bankov earned USTFCAA All-American honors by placing sixth in the hammer.

Cowley’s 4x800 relay team of Donte Howard, Deven Marshall, Morris Wynn and Tanner Blackmore also finished sixth and earned USTFCAA All-American recognition.

The Tigers were tied for sixth with 14 team points. Barton (30) holds a slim half-point lead ahead of second place South Plains after day one.

The three-day meet concludes today.

Hammer — Hristo Bankov, 177-3, sixth, USTFCAA All-American. 

Pole Vault — Trent Lawrence, 15-5, national runner-up, NJCAA All-American; Nathan Vann, 14-1.25, 11th. 



4x100 Relay — Cowley “A” (Kionte Sampson, Marie Alcindor, Jalia Franklin, Kedranea’ Addison), 47.39, 13th.

4x800 Relay — Cowley “A” (Wrylee Dickard, Naomi Similus, Taylor Williams, and Anna Keller), 9:19.50, third, NJCAA All-American. 

Long Jump — Kionte Sampson, 16-3.25, 14th.

Hammer — Israel Walker, 121-1, 20th. 

Pole Vault — Thais Lindemayer Gomes, 11-11.75, national champion and NJCAA All-American; Annie Kelley, 10-6, fifth, USTFCAA All-American; Bayley Holt, 10-0, tie for seventh, USTFCAA All-American.
