Vikings top El Dorado

Winfield High School Kyan Towles muscles his way to the basket Saturday against El Dorado in Ollie Thomas Gymnasium.

The Winfield High School boys basketball team put an end to a 13-game losing skid Saturday afternoon with a 69-62 victory against El Dorado in an AV-CTL D-III makeup game in Ollie Thomas Gymnasium.

The girls game was canceled due to COVID-19 issues in the El Dorado program.

The visiting Wildcats held the hot hand in the early going, hitting four 3-pointers in a 16-point first quarter.

After trailing by five, the Vikings (2-15, 2-6 AV-CTL D-III) responded with a 17-10 second-quarter run to take a 28-26 lead into halftime.

Winfield pulled away with an 18-point third quarter.

The two teams combined for 26-of-37 effort from the foul line and 46 points in the fourth quarter.

Aidan Harper scored 10 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter for Winfield, including 5 of 7 from the line down the stretch. Trent Beckwith hit a pair of 3-pointers and sank 5 of 7 from the line down the stretch in a 17-point effort. Kyan Towles scored all 11 of his points in the second half, including 5 of 8 from the line in the fourth quarter. Jacob George hit a pair of treys, then sank 3 of 4 from the line in the fourth quarter for nine points. Winfield finished 20 of 34 from the line.

Zach Wittenberg hit three baskets from 3-point range and led all scorers with 21 points for the Wildcats (4-14, 1-7), who were 11 of 17 from the line. Jaydon Sundgren, LJ Berkstresser and Jeremiah Kemboi added nine points apiece.

The Vikings won the first meeting 61-57 on Dec. 18 in El Dorado

The Winfield Vikings have come awfully close to some big wins this season.

Nobody, however, likes moral victories.

The Vikings missed a golden opportunity to defeat McPherson for the first time in many years, but a two-point third quarter was disastrous in a 59-46 loss Friday night in Ollie Thomas Gymnasium.

Jacob George buried a pair of 3-pointers and Kyan Towles added a trey in a five-point first quarter as the Vikings jumped out to a 13-12 lead.

The lead stayed at one point, 31-30, heading into halftime.

Then came the fateful third quarter.

Ar’mon Acosta and Towles each hit a free throw for the only points in the third quarter as McPherson pulled away 42-33 heading down the stretch.

The Bullpups (8-7, 6-1) sank just enough free throws down the stretch — 7 of 17 — to keep Winfield at bay.

Aidan Harper finished with 11 points and Towles added 10 for the Vikings, who were 7 of 13 from the foul line. Riley Yingling added eight points, but George was shut out after hitting those two first-quarter treys.

Seth Madron led all scorers with 18 points for the Bullpups, who were 16 of 31 from the line overall. Jayton Alexander added 12 points and Adam Elliott chipped in 11 for McPherson.

The last time the two teams played, the Vikings closed in on that elusive victory on Jan. 8 in McPherson before the Bullpups escaped with a 50-46 win.

Sometimes a coach just has to give a tip of the cap and move on.

Such was the case Friday night in Ollie Thomas Gymnasium as the No. 3-ranked McPherson Lady Bullpups outscored Winfield’s entire output in the first quarter of a 69-21 thrashing of the Lady Vikings.

The Lady Bullpups (13-2, 7-0 AV-CTL D-III) led 24-5 after the first quarter and 46-8 at halftime.

Winfield’s biggest output came in the third quarter, but the Lady Vikings (8-8, 3-4) were still outscored 18-9.

Ellie Koman came off the bench to led Winfield with nine points, all in the second half, including one of the Lady Vikings’ two 3-pointers.

Winfield’s two leading scorers, Aleah Moree and Haley Gedrose, were held to four points apiece.

Grace Pyle outscored the Lady Vikings all by herself, amassing 24 points, including three baskets from 3-point land. Peyton Howard added 14 points and Kassidy Bean chipped in 12 points — all three sat out the entire fourth quarter.
