Tennis center expansion gets formal dedication

Lucien Barbour, left, receives a standing ovation from the audience as he takes the podium during Friday afternoon’s formal dedication of the addition to the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Complex named in his honor. Barbour said he was “very pleased and humbled” with the naming of the addition and his hope was that the “legacy of outstanding tennis players in Winfield” would long continue. In addition to the seven new courts and other amenities such as shaded outdoor walkways, the T.H. “Curly” Vaughan Tennis Center also received a makeover and update including this room with a racquet stringing machine, TV and sitting area. (Donetta Godsey/Courier)

Six large, colorful perforated banners adorn the fence on the north side of the new Lucien Barbour Tennis Addition, welcoming people from the parking lot into the complex and adding a windbreak. Banners recognize the entities that will have tennis practices, lessons and competitions at the complex and whose partnership with the City of Winfield helped make the new facility a reality — Winfield High School, Southwestern College and the Winfield Recreation Commission.
